When I Wanted to Be Maia Campbell: A Lesson in Patience and Trust

girl watching tv

Once upon a time, I was a young girl, eyes glued to the television screen, watching Maia Campbell, the actress who played Tiffany Warren on a popular show called “In the House”, with LL COOL J. I was mesmerized by her beauty, her grace, her fabulous clothes, and her long, beautiful hair. All the boys at my school talked about her, and oh, how I wanted to be her. Not just like her, but her!

Fast forward to later in life, I learned that she struggled with drugs and found herself in some harsh circumstances. The shock and sadness I felt were palpable. It was like a wake-up call, a reminder that all that glitters isn't gold, and that we should be careful what we wish for.

In that moment, I realized how grateful I was that God isn't a genie. We often pray and demand things from God, things that we think we want, without really understanding what we're asking for. In a world driven by instant gratification, we are often impatient and ungrateful, always wanting more, always wanting it now.

But here's the thing: God isn't an order-taking service. He is the creator of all things, known and unknown. He knows what we need even when we don't. Our desires may be fickle, but God's love for us is unwavering. And so, we must trust him to provide what we need.

When we try to force our own way, to make our desires happen on our own timeline, we can often find ourselves unhappy, stuck, and trapped. It's like chasing a mirage, only to be left parched and disappointed.

God's word in Psalms 46:10 says, "Be still and know that I am God." In a world where everyone seems to be in a hurry, these words are a gentle reminder to slow down, to trust God, and to wait patiently for His timing. In other words, have several seats.

In Proverbs 3:5-6, we are instructed to "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." This scripture is a beautiful reminder that our understanding is limited, but God's wisdom is infinite.

So here's my advice:

  1. Be patient: In a world of instant gratification, patience is a virtue that we need to cultivate.

  2. Trust in God: Believe that God knows what you need and trust Him to provide.

  3. Be grateful: Instead of focusing on what you don't have, give thanks for what you do have.

  4. Stay grounded: Remember, all that glitters isn't gold. What looks desirable on the outside may not be beneficial for you.

  5. Seek God’s wisdom: Pray for understanding and guidance rather than specific outcomes.

  6. Practice contentment: Learn to be content with what you have while you wait for what you desire.

Remember, God isn't a genie. He is our loving Father who knows what's best for us. So let's trust Him, be patient, and learn to be content while we wait for His perfect timing. As God said, "Peace, be still." Maybe we all need to sit down somewhere and let God be God.
