Standing Firm: Navigating the Tensions between God's Word and the World

My family has grown up with a "Christian" faith. We went to church on occasion and prayed over our dinner. In truth, we did the bare minimum. As I grew older, I questioned my faith, solely based on the observation of lack of seriousness my family and those I knew, took in it. I took part in so many different faiths after that, from being a Muslim to Nuwabian to a Hebrew Israelite and others. I was disheartened by each one because of my experiences with the people. I went on this spiritual journey for a time (8 years) but came to realize after speaking with a Christian woman that, my relationship with God is MY relationship with God. This world filled me with distorted truths and distractions which made aligning myself with God's word feel like an uphill battle. We are bombarded with messages and influences that can easily lead us astray from God's path. However, as believers, we are called to stand firm in our faith, seek wisdom in scripture, and navigate life's challenges with God's word as our guide.

The Crafty Deceiver

The Bible introduces us to Satan informing us of his crafty and cunning nature in Genesis 3:1. He deceived Eve by distorting God's word, leading her away from God's will. His deception continues today and Satan seeks to distort and destroy God's word, enticing us to follow our own desires and feelings, which often contradict God's will. I can't help but notice how there are so many different types of denominations, let alone religions, in the world that use the Bible as it's book or at least reference it. Many believe that Christ exist and that there is a God, but God's truth, has been manipulated and adulterated. How do we find the truth or know what is true? By reading the Word of God for yourself, consistently, daily. I find that it also helps to read other Christian books, videos, and websites help me to confirm, clarify, or get a deeper understanding of what it is I'm reading. I really enjoy watching Bible Project, Jackie Hill Perry, Francis Chan, and IMBeggar amongst many others. You may also cross reference other books and use study tools like the apocrapha, concordance, or a commentary book. It may also help to join a bible study group either in person or online.

The Tension and the Call

Living in this world, we often find ourselves in a tension between God's word and the world's expectations. Revelation 3:15-16 admonishes us to be either hot or cold, not lukewarm. We need to remember that our God is Holy. He is the creature of EVERYTHING. How do you think you should enter into his presence? Sinful? Selfish? Shameful? I don't believe you would. When invited to a formal event, many of us put on our best clothes, our best fragrances, and present our best selves. If we do this for men, who are very flawed, what then do you think you would do for God? So many of us fall into the trap of bending God's will to fit our own desires. We're not following His Word. The formal party mentioned before, if it were an all white only affair, if it were a party you really wanted to attend because of the food and the caliber of people in attendance, you would follow those instructions to a "T". Why is it that, we believe we'll be invited into heaven and we haven't followed His instructions. Instead of studying and following God's word, we attempt to compromise, hoping to please both God and the world. However, as disciples of Christ, we are called to align ourselves fully with God's will, living out His word completely, without compromise.

Navigating the Spiritual Battle

Navigating this spiritual battle requires us to immerse ourselves in God's truth. Psalm 119:105 tells us that God's word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. By meditating on His word, we can resist the deceptive tactics of the enemy and live in alignment with God's will.

James 1:14-15 warns us that unchecked desires can lead us into sin. Hence, it is crucial to be mindful of what we are feeding our souls. Are we nourishing ourselves with God's word or are we indulging our own desires and feelings?

Trusting in God's Word

Trusting in God's word is paramount in our walk of faith. The word of God is truth and love, offering guidance and wisdom in a world filled with deception. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 encourages us to rely on the scriptures, which are God-breathed and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.

We must resist the temptation to manipulate God's word to fit our own realities and instead, trust in its authority and submit to its teachings. Remember, Like a parent to their child(ren), God's word is not a set of arbitrary rules, but a manifestation of His love for us.

Standing Firm

As we navigate life's challenges and tensions, may we continually seek God's guidance through His word. By feeding ourselves with His truth, aligning with His will, and trusting His word, we can stand firm in our faith and live a life that pleases God.

So, let's march forward, with the Bible as our compass, God's love as our motivation, and faith as our shield. Remember, in this spiritual battle, we are not alone. We have the ultimate guide, God's Word, and the ultimate victor, Jesus Christ, by our side.
