It can be challenging when your spouse is acting out of sorts, irritated, or what I refer to as “acting funky”, especially when their actions cause you to stress. Marriage is a partnership that involves dealing with each other's moods and emotions. It can be quite a challenge when your spouse is acting out of sorts or becoming irritated, which can cause you to feel stressed and worried. However, it's important to keep in mind that effective communication is the key to resolving conflicts and strengthening your relationship. The Bible provides us with a blueprint for the best ways to communicate with one another, and it's no different when it comes to communicating with our spouses during stressful times. In fact, the Bible emphasizes the importance of communication and offers guidance on how to communicate with love and understanding. One example of this guidance is found in Colossians 4:6, which says, "Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person." This verse reminds us that we should always be mindful of the words we use and how we say them. It's important to speak with kindness and respect, especially during times of stress and conflict. Let's explore 7 biblical tips for communication during stressful times and use this wisdom to inspire us to communicate with love, respect, and understanding in our marriages.
Seek God's Guidance through Prayer: In moments of stress and tension, turn to God in prayer. Ask for His wisdom, guidance, and peace to help you navigate the situation with your spouse. Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
Practice Active Listening: Actively listen to your spouse's concerns and emotions without interrupting or becoming defensive. This may seem challenging, but I believe you can do it! Show empathy, understanding, and validate their feelings. Proverbs 18:13 encourages us, "To answer before listening—that is folly and shame."
Choose Your Words Wisely: Be mindful of your words and tone during conversations with your spouse. Speak with kindness, patience, and respect, even when tensions are high. Ephesians 4:29 advises, "Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear."
Take Responsibility for Your Actions: Reflect on your own behavior and actions that may have contributed to the situation. Humbly acknowledge any mistakes or shortcomings, and apologize if necessary. Matthew 7:5 reminds us, "You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye."
Find a Time for Calm and Open Discussion: Choose a time when both you and your spouse are calm and composed to have an open and honest conversation about your feelings. Create a safe space where you can express your thoughts and concerns without judgment. Proverbs 15:1 encourages, "A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger."
Seek Understanding through Empathy: Try to understand your partner's perspective and emotions by putting yourself in their shoes. Show empathy and compassion towards their feelings. 1 Peter 3:8 advises, "Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind."
Work Together to Find Solutions: Approach the situation as a team and work together to find solutions that address both of your needs. Compromise, brainstorm ideas, and be open to different perspectives. Proverbs 15:22 reminds us, "Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers, they succeed."

Remember, every relationship is unique, and these tips serve as general guidance. If you find yourselves struggling to communicate effectively, seeking professional counseling or guidance from a trusted pastor can be beneficial.
